Internal Family Systems, or IFS, views the mind as made up of parts, such as an inner critic, a protector or a wounded part, and a core Self that can lead with curiosity and compassion.

In IFS you get to know your parts, understand what they are protecting and help them let go of burdens. It is used for trauma, anxiety, self-criticism and inner conflict, and many people find it gentle and validating.

Common questions

What are parts in IFS?

Parts are sub-personalities that hold different feelings and roles, like a protective part or a young part. IFS treats all of them as valuable.

Is IFS the same as DID?

No. IFS sees having parts as normal for everyone. Dissociative identity disorder is a separate condition.
