Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment without judgment. In therapy it helps you notice thoughts, feelings and body sensations without getting swept away by them.

Mindfulness practices are woven into approaches such as ACT and DBT and used for stress, anxiety, rumination and emotional regulation. Practices are adapted to be accessible and trauma-sensitive, since sitting still can be hard for some people. See Micro Mindfulness.

Common questions

Do I have to meditate?

No. Mindfulness can be as brief as a minute of noticing your breath, and can be movement-based or eyes-open.

Is mindfulness safe for trauma survivors?

It can be, when adapted with care. Tell your clinician if certain practices feel uncomfortable so they can adjust.
